Where Passion Meets Practice: My FGASA Field Assessment

On the 26th of March, I took a thrilling step in my journey as a game drive guide: a practical assessment for the Field Guides Association of Southern Africa (FGASA) qualification. This has been a long-awaited milestone, and I am honoured to share my experience with you.
As I drove into the bush, my heart racing with anticipation, I knew that this was more than just a practical assessment. It was an opportunity to showcase my knowledge, skills, and passion for the natural world. With an experienced assessor beside me, I set out to demonstrate my ability to interpret the bush, ensuring a safe and exhilarating experience for my guests.
The assessment challenged me to think critically and respond intuitively to the ever-changing environment. Every winding trail and unexpected sighting demanded focus. I was mindful of the assessor’s watchful eye, but I remained focused on providing an exceptional experience.
Throughout the assessment, I drew upon the valuable lessons I’ve learned during my FGASA training. One of the most significant takeaways has been the importance of creating a comfortable and engaging experience for my guests. I’ve learned to be attentive to their needs, to listen actively, and to tailor my guiding style to suit their interests and preferences.
A highlight of the day was the diverse range of insects we encountered, many of which I had never seen before. My assessor’s keen eye spotted even the smallest creatures, and his enthusiasm was infectious. The guests in the vehicle were equally engaging, sharing their knowledge and asking thoughtful questions. Their eagerness to learn and explore the bush was inspiring.
Initially, I felt a bit apprehensive, but as the drive progressed, I found myself relaxing and enjoying the experience. The guests’ openness and communicative nature put me at ease, and I began to appreciate the beauty of the bush through their eyes.
My FGASA qualification is more than just a credential; it represents a commitment to excellence, a passion for conservation, and a dedication to sharing the beauty and complexity of the African wilderness with others.
As I look to the future, I am filled with excitement and anticipation. I am eager to continue learning, growing, and refining my skills as a guide. I am committed to providing exceptional experiences for my guests, inspiring a love for nature, and contributing to the conservation of our precious wildlife heritage.
The bush has a way of teaching you to live in the moment, to appreciate the beauty around you and to respect the power of nature. I hope my story inspires you to pursue your passions, to never stop learning, and to strive for excellence in all that you do.
